Painted treated linen knapsack typical of the post-War of 1812 period that saw the rise and popularity of the American militia unit. Painted linen is overall dark barn red/brown color with a black center trimmed in gold with a surrounding sun ray pattern. "B L I" initials representing the Brattleboro Light Infantry from Vermont. Woven flap is secured on the inside by 2 thin leather straps and tinned-iron buckles, wide linen upholstery tape for shoulder straps, and thin leather cross strap with tinned-iron buckle linen straps appear to be intact as seen from the front of the knapsack which is professionally mounted and housed in a plexiglass case. Measures outside of case 13 - 3/4" x 16 - 1/4". CONDITION: Very good overall with 85% of the original paint remaining and unfaded. PROVENANCE: Former collection Bushnell Museum, Vernon, Vermont. BRM.
