The Volkswagen Type 1, or informally known as Beetle or Bug, was manufactured by German automaker Volkswagen from 1938 until 2003. Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, wanted an inexpensive and simple car to be mass-produced for the new highway system of Germany. He contracted Ferdinand Porsche, in 1934, to build the car. It took until 1938 to finalize the design. With over 21 million manufactured in air-cooled, rear-engine mounted rear wheel drive configuration, the Beetle is the longest-running and most manufactured car of a single platform worldwide. Hitler insisted the Volkswagen (literally meaning “Peoples Car” in German) be a basic vehicle, capable of transporting 2 adults and three children at 62 mph while achieving 32 mpg. The engine had to be powerful enough for rapid sustained cruising on Germany’s newly constructed autobahn. In 1971, a new Beetle model featuring Macpherson front suspension and redesigned front end was launched along side the “standard” Beetle. The redesign, commonly called the Super Beetle, allowed for tighter turning radius despite having a longer wheelbase that allowed for a larger front storage compartment. In 1956 AFC fuel injection was introduced as well as rack and pinion steering. Offered is perhaps one of the finest “untouched” original VW Beetles in the world. With just 7,300 original miles, there is not a blemish to be found anywhere. The two owner Beetle has been garaged and covered in heated storage since new. It has been routinely exercised and serviced in order to keep it ready to drive to the local and national shows its been entered in. The silver paint and black interior are as new.
