Mercedes launched the CL500 for the model year 2000. A twelve cylinder CL600 was also offered with the supercharged 5.5 liter CL55 AMG soon to follow. The four-passenger coupe has active body control suspension, Xenon lights, moonroof and heated wipers. Five-speed Touch Shift automatic transmission is standard with the CL55 receiving the five-speed Speed Shift automatic gearbox. Anti-lock brakes, traction control and full power amenities are also all standard.The CL500 Coupe on which the 55 AMG is based is a powerful touring coupe with 5.0 liter 302 hp engine. However, the 03 AMG adds an additional 200 hp to the two- ton pillar-less hardtop. The addition of an intercooled screw-type supercharger and slightly longer stroke results in 5.5 liters, 493 hp, and 515 ft lbs of torque. This is a serious pavement buckling, addictive sound like you’ve never heard kind of performance from a bank vault solid German luxury coupe.
