Moran, an important historical painter who attended classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design, documented many scenes from the Revolutionary War. An original painting of similar composition depicting Washington greeting female guests at Mount Vernon was sold in 2017 by Cowan's. This print was likely made from the pendant piece in this series. Photogravures, mezzotints and engravings after Moran's illustrations are common. This particular example has been partially hand painted with gouache pigments.
