Alice Schille studied at the Art Students League in New York and the New York School of Art with William Merritt Chase. Throughout the 1930's and 1940's, Schille travelled in Central America, including Mexico and Guatemala. The scene depicts a group of Central American children with their parents watching an artist sketching them. The artist includes only her hand and sketchbook to the lower right of the composition, alluding to her presence. There is a study of a two men in conversation on verso.
