Alonzo Chapell was born in New York City and had a natural talent for painting. In 1843 he enrolled in a single class at the National Academy of Art which appears to be the extent of his formal training. From 1849 through the early 1850s he exhibited genre paintings at the American-Art Union and participated in shows at the Brooklyn Art Association, the National Academy of Design, and the prestigious Goupil Gallery. His work came to the attention of the publisher Henry Johnson, and Chappel accepted an offer by Johnson to design the illustrations for a work then in preparation, which was John Frederick Schroeder's "Life and Times of Washington", subsequently published in 1857. The success of this first endeavor allowed Chapell to work at Johnson's until his retirement in 1885. This pastel is likely a model for one of the many books he illustrated during his career. Believed to be Robert E. Lee in picture. Not examined out of frame.
