For a similar example of this hilt, see 311.S on pg. 165 of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George Neumann. The slightly curved double-fullered blade in engraved on both sides with the great seal of the United States with an early "chicken" eagle. Above the seal are scrolls and below, panoplies of arms. Heavy iron guard and stirrup hilt, forward turned quillon. Iron pommel cap and integral backstrap. Leather wrapped wood grip with bulbous sections and fine brass wire. CONDITION: Blade retains a dark grey patina, some battle nicks to edges. Hilt retains a dark brown patina. Leather grip very good with scattered minor flaking and crazing. A very nice and massive horseman's saber. DMG
