An eye-catching colonial apothecary box or liquor tantalus that bears the date "1754" on the front. The box is constructed of oak and measures approximately 26" x 15" x 10". A 4" x 2 - 3/4" iron lock and catch secures the chest which is complete with its original key. Interior is lined with paper and features 6 different chambers which each measuring approximately 8 - 1/2" x 7". The initials "SS" are carved above the "1754" date. The consigner states that the box was discovered in upstate New York, an area rich with artifacts of this circa. CONDITION: The lid is warped, and the box cannot close properly. Edge wear with scattered dents and bug holes. Interior lining exhibits blemishes and tears but is mostly intact. Solid construction. A very nice and displayable box.
