With only 3,000 ever manufactured, and most of these either converted to percussion or reconverted to flintlock, the 1808 North Navy is one of the more important US martial pistols. The lock has clear S. North markings, the eagle somewhat worn. Belt hook appears to be an extremely well-made modern addition. CONDITION: Walnut full stock with repaired split on left side and one repaired crack under lock on right. Lock is slightly proud of stock. Brass pan showing fine mustard-brown patination. Double-neck cock has even age brown and what appears to be ancient slightly raised rust. Brass furniture with attractive, unclean patination. Barrel with smooth, even aged patina, with what appears to be slightly raised rust around touch hole. While gun appears to be original flint, it is possible it is an extremely old and well accomplished reconversion. Stock shows no original inspector marks. Still a very attractive and rare US martial pistol, which was once as desirable as a Patterson Colt. The hickory ramrod appears to be a replacement. Bore is good, with minor roughness. Action is defective.
