Early in the war the U.S. imported 10,000 French uniform sets through the firm of Godillot that included chasseur style jackets and these 1860 pattern shakos. This one still has its US front plate with an eagle bearing a United State shield on its chest, over a light infantry style hunting horn, and red, white, and blue rosette. The hat retains it rare green feather plume. Most now carry later pompoms substituted over the years. The uniforms and these shakos were issued to regiments through a drill competition. Known recipients include the 18th Massachusetts, 62nd and 83rd Pennsylvania, and one regiment of the Excelsior Brigade. The shakos later turn up in use by bandsmen of the Veteran Reserve Corps posted in Washington. CONDITION: Good. Horizontal push to the plate. Minor scruffs a finish loss to the leather. Sweat band present, but with wear and detached with losses on one side. Chinstrap present. Plume very good. A real piece of Civil War headgear shown in period photographs.
