This powder horn measures about 15" in length overall, including the plug. The horn has a short cone-shaped spout section and a tapered body. In the center is a cartouche with neat block letters "IOHN BUTLER". It appears it may have read "IOHN BUTLERS HORN" and part of the inscription is no longer present. The plug is of cork and there are several different nails for earlier carrying strap attachment. The pins retaining the plug are wooden. CONDITION: Horn retains a pleasing dark honey patina, and shows scattered marks from use and heavy wear from carrying. There are some minor losses around the plug and some deterioration to the plug itself. It is possible that this horn belonged to the infamous John Butler of '"Butler's Rangers". John Butler lived between 1728 and 1796 and he was a Loyalist who led the well-known militia unit 'Butler's Rangers' in New York on the north frontier during the Revolutionary War. DMG
