This is a wonderful example of a late 19th century singing bird box automata, most likely from Germany. Clockwork operation, flip the switch and the bird appears, chirping and flapping its wings, entertains for about 15 seconds and disappears back into the box. These bird boxes were quite a novelty in 1890 and generally owned by the aristocracy in Europe, and brought to the U.S. in the early 20th century. A wonderful example and in great operating condition. Detailed brass cage is flawless and comes with a winding key.
