Elkington, date mark for 1884, the ewer with a tall and narrow ovoid body, the low dish with a broad rim and wide central boss, both in the mannerist style with raised classical figures in scroll reserves on the rim highlighted in red and yellow gilding on silver and a patinated matte finish background, the center with similar decoration, the inner rim engraved "Presented by Tho.s and Ja.s Harrison of Liverpool to Admiral Jowett of the United States Navy in grateful remembrance of valuable services rendered to the British Steamship 'Historian' Dec.r 1885"; the ewer with similar decoration. Maker's mark and date letter under ewer foot rim; Patent Office diamond mark for design for October 1869. Diameter of dish: 22-1/2"; Height of ewer: 19". From the Ray Bentley Collection.
