Third quarter 19th century. Waltham, Massachusetts. A. L. Jewell was probably the most experimental of his contemporaries, both in form and use of materials. This is a very rare example made of copper flattened full body form which is applied with layered embossed sheet copper tail. The resulting body is quite heavy, appearing to have utilized a significant percentage of zinc alloy in formulating the copper. The sheet tail is nicely decorated, incised with stylized plumage and dramatic feathering. The rooster is attached and standing on the original copper mounting rod, now accompanied by a museum stand. In "The Art of The Weathervane", by Miller, page 37, a nearly identical example is shown, one of three known. Very fine untouched original condition, with good verdigris and oxidized surfaces; exhibiting worn yellow sizing which remains on the tail.

Condition: (Very Good).

Item Dimensions: 22" x 18 -1/2" x 8".
EXCEPTIONAL A. L. JEWELL & CO. ROOSTER WEATHERVANE.
