Civil War 1860 Pattern Cavalry Officer's Saber by Ames. Gilt brass hilt with etched blade. Scabbard brown/blue with gilt brass mounts. Cast floral motifs on the hilt and eagle on the inner face of the counterguard. Blade with etched floral motifs on either side. Obverse with etched Ames address at ricasso, trophy of arms at center with raised-wing American eagle overhead and drypoint etched ribbon amid vine with motto above. Trophy of arms with script "US" as central motifs on reverse. CONDITION: Very good. Brass hilt preserves some original gilt. Sharkskin grip wrap is excellent deep grey showing little wear. Binding wire in place, tight and showing color. Etching is vivid with very good preserved frosting. Good edge and point. A few scattered small grey spots on obverse. Reverse shows more and a bit larger, scattered on the high points, some along upper edge over first section of floral motifs and under the "US," elsewhere more scattered. Scabbard shows scattered small brown spots coming up under the color, but nothing too objectionable. Mounts show traces of gilt. Drag screw possibly replaced. A very nice example of the US regulation Civil War cavalry officer's saber by the most well-known US maker. (SR). PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
