For another nearly identical example imported from Gill and retailed by Wells, see page 266 of "American Swords and Sword Makers: Volume II" by Richard H. Bezdek. The sword dates between 1790 and 1810 and has a long slightly curved blade with partial wide single fuller. Both sides have engraved decoration. Right side shows floral motifs and a Federal eagle with an "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" banner in its beak. The other side shows a stand of arms with a liberty cap and a banner for "WELLS & CO / New York" for retailer Lemuel Wells & Company located in New York, New York. The ricasso is stamped with a "G" for maker Thomas Gill of Birmingham, England. The gilt brass reverse 'P' hilt has a counterguard on the right with a pieced diamond in the center. The pommel and integral backstrap are faceted. The ivory grip is fluted. The sword is complete with its original tooled black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. CONDITION: Blade retains a mostly grey patina with areas of light pitting and some traces of blue and gilt finishes. Hilt retains about 30-40% original gilt finish, mostly in protected or low areas. Grip shows some minor chipping around pommel and some cracks from age. Scabbard has been recolored and shows a crazed surface with some losses to finish and surface cracks. Mounts retain generous traces of gilt, otherwise a dark mustard patina. An attractive and early horseman's saber with its original scabbard. DMG. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
