Wood box with sliding cover carved on the edge to resemble the spine of a book. Made of found or scrap materials. Typical of Civil War camp art created to kill time in winter camps or prisoner of war camps. The interior bottom inscribed in brown ink, “House Money” along with a faint inscription on the sliding cover. A modern card with it reads “Made by / My Dad / at Fort Delaware / Rose.” Additional notes on the card identify Fort Delaware as “POW cap on Delaware River circa 1864,” and say the box came from the “Anderson estate 1990s Martinsville, WVA.” A 1959 newspaper clipping with it, however, references a “Victor F. Anderson,” as a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Texas and one time resident of Martinsburg, not Martinsville. His lineage for his SCV membership might provide the identity of the maker if it could be tied to a “Rose.” An additional note inside reads (possibly): “FT Delaware Capt AA Gibson E C Andr’s Co.” CONDITION: Very good.
