Meerschaum pipe colored throughout with a rich orange-burgundy color from use. Silver mouthpiece with bordered florals and a beaded neck, while lid is marked "FROM S. RAPP. NEW YORK / TO THE / AMERICAN SHARP SHOOTERS / 1868". A newspaper article listing the procession and parade includes a listed "Six American Sharpshooters, with the newest and most approved breechloaders"; perhaps this pipe was given to them for their participation? CONDITION: Overall excellent, showing some marks throughout from handling, but all parts appear strong with no signs of resoldering to silver. Silver is tarnished from age, could easily be cleaned by the new owner. Legends are crisp. A fascinating little piece. EMW
