Circa late 1840s-1850s. 8" blade with an overall length of 12 - 1/2". Double edged blade marked on both sides "GEO WOSTENHOLM I*XL". Cast nickel silver frame handle with flat oval guard and pointed escutcheon, highlighted by beautiful tortoiseshell scales (a thin layer over gold leaf-covered wood.) No sheath. CONDITION: Blade with sharpening scratches, the handles missing a chip on each side and with a few areas of insect damage. Tortoiseshell handles are quite rare on antique bowie knives and those by Wostenholm are particularly beautiful, due largely to the handle construction exhibited here. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
