Great example of a World War II Japanese Type 90 helmet with battle damage and foliage wire. The helmet shell exhibits what is possibly a bullet strike or artillery damage on the back right side as well as damage on the left side rim. The hole on the right side measures approximately 1" with the lower portion of the metal shell pushed inward towards the liner, while the damage to the rim of the shell is pushed outward, possibly an entrance and exit wound. The angle could make sense for a projectile that was shot from above the helmet at an angle. The helmet retains its original liner which exhibits patina consistent with the shell and appears to have been attached to the helmet since it was originally assembled. The liner was not damaged by the projectile, however the portion of metal from the shell which was pushed inward has indented the liner and a rust stained blemish was formed due to the metal being pushed up against the liner for quite some time. The “pillows” behind the three leather liner tongues do not retain their padding. Canvas chinstrap is also present and exhibits similar patina to the helmet and liner. The helmet also retains its original foliage wire, which is twisted in place and protrudes from the holes on the top of the helmet. Original star is present. CONDITION: The helmet retains most of its original tan and green paint with scattered scuffs and blemishes. Surface rust is exhibited in some areas, especially around the damage. Leather components of the liner are stiff, canvas chinstrap is frayed in areas. Overall good. A nice example of a battle damaged Japanese helmet, which are seldom encountered with the liner. JLD
