The letter measures approximately 11" x 8 - 1/2" and is written in German. The translation reads: "Dear Mr. Devereux Unfortunately, I have too few connections to universities to be able to advise you in this regard. As far as our institute is concerned, it already has the available scholarship funds for the next six months. The one of our professors who is closest to sociology is Dr. Mitrany, but who is presently working in England in the service of the government. So it will probably be best if you write to Professor Edward M. Earle, Institute for Advanced Study Princeton, who of those available should be closest to your endeavors. Perhaps it would also be good if you sent me one of your works so that I can possibly do something for you. With excellent regards, A. Einstein.". The letter is dated "1. Juli 1940" (July 1, 1940) and was drafted in Saranac Lake, New York, a place that Einstein first came to during the summers of 1936-1937 seeking the relaxing solitude of lake life. Throughout the late 30s and early 40s, he became a regular in the area and most likely drafted this letter while he was enjoying a trip of relaxation. This letter was once part of the renowned John K. Lattimer Collection. Lattimer was known to collect signatures from all types of celebrities, personalities, and noteworthy figures. A very nice pre-World War II Einstein letter. The letter comes with a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity. CONDITION: The paper was once folded, most likely in the envelope it was sent in, and creases are visible. Slight discoloration to the paper which has faded with age. Signature is nearly unmolested and remains legible.
