Lot consists of 2 items: (A) Civil War pencil sketch in period frame and oval mat captioned at bottom in period ink in banner scroll: “B.F. BARNARD QTR. MAST / 59TH MASS. VET. VOLS. / IN FRONT OF PETERSBURG.” 3 tents appear in foreground, 1 with stovepipe, 1 with chimney and 1 tent covering a stable. Tent roofed wood hut in background. A few stray trees with some woods at right rear, plainly meant to show deforested area with tree down at right. 3 figures, 1 holding horse at center. Horse in the covered stable at right. Benjamin Franklin Barnard served in 3 units throughout the war and was a “minuteman of 1861.” A 36 year-old merchant, he enlisted right after Fort Sumter, on 4/16/61 and mustered in as a sergeant in Co. B of the 5th Mass 5/1/61. The regiment was a 90-day unit, but fought at Bull Run, losing 9 killed, 2 wounded, and 23 captured. He mustered out 7/31/61 and enlisted again, receiving a commission as 2nd Lt. Co. K 23rd Mass. 12/4/61, resigning 8/19/63 to take a promotion as 1st Lt. and Quartermaster of the 59th Mass. 10/16/63, with which he served until muster out 6/13/65. During his time with the 23rd, they fought in North Carolina at Roanoke, New Bern, Kinston, and Whitehall. The 59th saw action in the 9th Corps at Wilderness, Spottsylvania, the North Anna, Cold Harbor, and extensive service at Petersburg, losing 90 officers and men in killed or mortally wounded alone. CONDITION: Glass is loose. Very good. (B) Iron flat oval mold incised in reverse to produce a soldier on guard with musket, bayonet and bell-crown shako in front of cannon and U.S. flag with letters “S.C.A. 20” overhead and a ring of raised dots around the edge. Unknown purpose and unit designation. CONDITION: Very good.
