Lot consists of: (A) Circa 1820s-1830s common militia cap plate. Struck in copper and most likely silvered when it was constructed, the plate features a spread winged federal eagle, with head turned to the left, arrows in right talon, olive branches in left talon, with the national motto presented in a banner draped between both wings over the head of the bird of prey. The eagle is proudly superimposed on a trophy of arms while 13 5-pointed stars shine overhead. The plate also features an interesting floral border which replaced the earlier plain, stippled border. Various holes of differing sizes appear around the border. The smaller holes were most likely original while the larger holes were probably for remounting to a different hat. The reverse features evidence of soldering, suggesting retaining mounts for securing and a plume were once present. Measures approximately 4 - 3/4" x 3 - 1/2". CONDITION: Plate exhibits a pleasant patina with areas of verdigris and oxidation evident especially around the border. Reverse exhibits surface rust. Overall good. (B) Circa 1818-1835 Common Militia waist belt plate. As is typical with this period, the belt is more square than rectangular and was most likely struck from a larger cap plate die. Similar configuration to the cap plate, with federal spread winged eagle with left turned head, while the stars above the eagle are 6-pointed rather than 5. Brass construction with gilt finish. Applied tongue and belt loop bar featuring iron keepers on reverse. Measures approximately 2 - 3/4" x 2 - 3/4". CONDITION: Scattered areas of verdigris, especially around the eagle. Pleasing dark patina. Areas of gilt loss with nice overall appearance. overall good.
