Lot consists of: a regulation 1860 light cavalry saber and a non-regulation "Peterson 75" sword by Clauberg and retail marked by Horstmann. (A) Standard US cavalry 1860 pattern saber. "Ames Mfg Co. Chicopee Mass." in three lines reverse ricasso. Obverse "U.S. ADK" and date with partial last digit but seems to be 1862. Brass hilt with untouched mellow patina. Leather and wire in place. Blade pad in place. Scabbard brown, with rings, throat and drag in place. CONDITION: Brown staining to brass hilt. Wear to leather grip. Wire in place and tight. Blade is steel grey mixed with darker grey areas. Scattered small edge nicks. Some crusty brown above ricasso. Scabbard with raised brown freckling coming up overall, but mostly on the lower half. (B) Peterson-75 non-regulation sword with British style steel hilt, backstrap with ears, sharkskin grip with wire. Cut out eagle with "US" underneath and motto ribbon overhead in counterguard. Clauberg trademark reverse ricasso; Horstmann address obverse around inset brass "proved" disk. Blade etched with central American eagle and motto ribbon on obverse, "US" on reverse, both bordered by foliate scrolls, on lightly frosted panels with Arabesque terminals. CONDITION: Hilt is good, steel grey with brown mixing in on pommel, backstrap and bottom of knuckleguard. Blade muted silver with a few dark grey spots a few of which appear at the very end of frosted panel on reverse. Scabbard polished to steel grey with some brown and dark grey spotting on lower half. Otherwise very good. A nice representative pair of regulation and non-regulation US swords. The Peterson-75 was valued by officers of all ranks for its robust steel scabbard. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
