Talbot served in the 6th PA Battalion as Captain from January 1776; in the 7th from Feb. 1777; promoted Major September 1777; retired January 1781. The lot consists of 11 items. (A) Letter to his wife, dated July 2, 1777, with report of the June 22 attack of Brunswick, “our brigade made the attack commanded by Gen. Wayne..” The British demolished their fortifications and retreated, “I can with pleasure assure you that there is not one of them left in the Jerses escept the prisoners & deserters that have fallen into our hands…” (B) Letter to his wife from White Marsh, near Valley Forge, Nov. 17, 1777. Reports has some clothing and bedclothes but lost his books and other things. Hoped to be out of the army before he needed more clothing. Morgan’s riflemen had just arrived, but plans of the army were kept secret. (C) Letter to his wife May 6, 1778 and May 7. “Yesterday was the greatest day America ever saw, we have had a “few de joy” in camp in consequence of the happy news from France..” (D) Undated “list of arms accoutrements & clothing delivered to a part of Capt. Wilson’s company by Jeremiah Talbott Capt. 7th P.B.” List includes coats, jackets, breeches, etc., but also musquets, cartouche boxes, belts, and tomahawks. (E) A 2-page list of 1776 stoppages for arms and clothing for his company. (F) 2 pages of pay receipts from members of his company to him. (G) May 1791 letter from the Comptroller General’s Office giving notice that claims made against the government for debts or payments made on its behalf must be filed by July 1. (H) October 1787 certificate that Walter Beaty has taken the Oath of Allegiance, signed by Samuel Boyer. (I) A muster roll of part of Capt. Jeremiah Talbot’s company of the Seventh Pennsylvania Regiment commanded by Co. William Irvine, April 2, 1776. (J) A list of 10 men with dates of enlistment, with certification that they were effective and acknowledged themselves enlisted for 3 years. CONDITION: Very good overall. Some small edge losses, folds, etc. Lot includes typed transcripts of the letters and various collector notes.
