1-page 1775 dated ledger account of payments made by "The Colony of Massachusetts Bay to the Town of Newbyport (Newburyport)To Sundry Expresses &c. Fourteen entries with expenses for individuals and horses." The first entry is, "To Timothy Wyer for himself expence & Horse to carry Intelligence of the Alarum of the Battle at Lexington to Portsmouth." The second is to "Enoch Plummer himself Expence & horse to Bradford to gain intelligence of eh afors. ("aforesaid"?) alarum," followed by a second payment to him for a ride to Portsmouth. Several other entries are for "expresses" to places not named, but 2 are to Cambridge and there is payment "To Samuel Tufts Cash pd. Moses Fessenden as Express on the alarum of the Battle at Bunkers Hill." CONDITION: Very good. Minor edge nicks at three horizontal fold lines. Docketed "Duplicate" twice on reverse. Exceptional insight into the communication network established among various Massachusetts communities as tensions with Great Britain turned into open conflict.
