19th century, China. Gouache on paper. The first, a portrait of a female personage with jeweled crown dressed in a red robe with blue panels decorated with fruit, butterflies and birds in flight, a pair of guardian lions in the foreground. The second is a portrait of a bearded gentleman with cap, black quilted robe, with rank badge of an exotic spread-wing bird, seated on a throne, a pair of guardian lions in the foreground. Each housed in a molded ebonized frame with red liner under glass. The smaller one is 44" x 21". Both works have been professionally restored and stabilized, probably laid down on backing. Palette remains vibrant.
