Circa 1830s-1840s. 8 - 1/2” clip point blade marked only "SCHIVELY" in a single line. 1-piece ebony handle with checkered panels, nickel silver guard, and pommel cap. Leather sheath with leather body, nickel silver mounts with attached brass letter “M”, and brass belt loop. 13 - 1/8" overall. The handle and fittings are replacements, and, while the leather sheath body is old, the fittings appear to be replacements. CONDITION: The blade is in excellent condition, with a nice uncleaned appearance and a couple of tiny nicks in the edge. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the Antique Bowie Knife Association, circa 1980. With this last name-only marking, the knife could have been made by the famed Hendy Schively, maker of a knife for Rezin Bowie, or his lesser-known sons George or Charles. An unprecedented opportunity to purchase a genuine Schively bowie knife at a bargain price. Illustrated and described in the article “It’s a Shively!” by Rick Mack, in the Spring 1997 edition of the Antique Bowie Journal, which explains how it was originally discovered in 1971. Ex. Rick Mack collection. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
