Ames Model 1860 naval cutlass that would have been carried by US Navy shipboard personnel during the Civil War. The cutlass is in standard M1860 configuration with slightly curved blade that features a flat back, and wide, unstopped fuller. The ricasso is marked "(anchor) / 1861" on the obverse and "“MADE BY / AMES MFG Co / CHICOPEE / MASS” contained within the classic Ames unraveled scroll. Standard cup guard is heavy sheet brass riveted to the knucklebow which was often referred to as the "soup ladle" due to its cup shape. Underside of quillon area is stamped "3M / 642". Grip is of grooved wood that is wrapped with leather. No twisted brass wire. Brass pommel with tiered cap. The cutlass is complete with its brown leather scabbard that features a leather belt loop hanger and flowered rivet at the tip. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered areas of freckling and pitting. Scroll mark is weak, which is typical, as this mark is often partially worn down by the scabbard. Guard exhibits a pleasant patina with marks from handling and age. Nice leather wrap with small cracks. Scabbard remains strong with tight seam and scattered blemishes. Several small dents, one repaired crack. A nice example of a Civil War cutlass.
