Civil War Model 1850 Staff and Field officer's sword with iron scabbard. The sword features a slightly curved, deeply fullered blade that is decorated with patriotic motifs. The obverse features foliate scrollwork, military motifs, and a panoply of arms which flank the letters "U.S.". The reverse exhibits similar decorations which flank a banner that reads "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and a patriotic spread winged eagle with a shield protecting its chest. The designs end with geometric lines surrounding a palmette at the ricasso. The spine is correctly marked with signature Klingenthal cursive. The guard exhibits wonderful open floral scrollwork which surrounds the staff and field letters "US". The knucklebow is unadorned which makes the foliate quillon stand out. The pommel features foliate scrolls which lead to a tired cap. Between the guard and the pommel is a thick, grooved wood grip that is wrapped with black leather and twisted brass wire which rests nicely in the grooves of the grip. The sword is complete with an iron scabbard which has been japanned and features one mount and carry ring. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a gray patina with scattered pitting and dark spots. Pitting is especially evident at the ricasso and along the edge of the blade. The guard exhibits a dark patina with dark spots and light tarnishing. The grip exhibits scuffs and handling wear. Brass wire remains tight. Scabbard exhibits various dents, especially towards the middle. Some of the japanned finish remains. Overall good. JLD
