Rare World War II US Marine Corps 3rd Pattern Jump Smock which was modified into a jacket. The 3rd pattern "Step-in" smock, was similarly designed based off of the early German fallschirmjager smock and were constructed of double-sided herringbone twill with 2 camouflage patterns. One side is a green "jungle" pattern camouflage on the other side is a tan "beach" pattern camouflage on the reverse. Configured in the "step-in" style, the smocks featured button snaps which ran 3/4 the length of the front. These smocks feature a large pocket on either side of the back, accessible by a 3-snap flap on the "jungle" side and a set of Talon marked zippers on the "beach" side, as well as 2 large button snap pockets on either side of the torso. This example has been theater modified into a combat jacket, as evidenced by the removal of the lower portion of the smock. The Paramarines were disbanded in 1944 and the personnel were transferred to other units, however it was not uncommon for Paramarines to retain some of their equipment and modify it for use in their new assignments. With the exception of the removal of the lower portion, the jacket is in the standard configuration of the smock, featuring the correct snap enclosures, pockets, and material. This example also appears to have never had the elbow pads added. CONDITION: The jacket exhibits vibrant colors with typical areas of fading, especially on the sleeves. There are several field repairs, including a 2 - 3/4" repair which removed the top snap on the left side, and a 4" repair on the right arm. 2 small holes on the right shoulder. All snaps and zippers function properly. Overall very good. This is an excellent example of a rare smock that was modified in the field. JLD
