Regulation US 1833 pattern saber for enlisted dragoons. Standard pattern hilt, blade and scabbard. Blade etched "United States" over a leafy branch on reverse. Obverse etched "NP Ames / Cutler / Springfield / 183[?]" near base of blade. Inscription is rubbed down the right side. The last digit of the date is not clear, but the inspector's initial TW are crisp near the guard and according to Thillmann he only worked only in 1837. CONDITION: Brass hilt shows mellow untouched patina. "ORD / HKC" stamp on inside of counterguard. Brown leather grip wrap with about seventy percent of finish with some lighter brown showing. Coiled wire binding complete and in place. Blade pad a replacement. Good edge and point. Some scattered grey spots. One patch gray speckling 10" from guard on obverse. Color largely steel grey or subdued silver. Etching readily visible. Scabbard complete with drag, rings and throat and appears to show original lacquer. Small bit of tape residue between mounts that should clean. A nice example of a dragoon saber. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
