This exceptional example has applied mythological dolphins beneath the mouth piece and with a dory, ship's anchor, binnacle entwined in rope at the juncture of throat and bell. The throat is inscribe "Presented to Capt. Samuel Brooks/March 12th/1869/ by a few friends" all within an ornate cartouche of brightwork. The bell is decorated with a three masted steamship sailing in rough seas and inscribed with a declaration "Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re" which translates to "Gentle in manner, resolute in deed". The opening of the bell bordered with a rope design. Inside of the bell is the hallmark of Gorham Silversmiths, Providence, Rhode Island and inscribed "Made by W. R. Tice, Corner Fulton & Johnston Sts. Brooklyn, N.Y. U.S.A." Horn is mounted in an retains the original velvet lined, leather covered, presentation case, also with the company name inscribed within. Horn is 15-1/2" tall, 36.97 toz. The horn is in very fine to excellent condition, there are some light surface scratches on exterior of bell by the Latin phase. Case is in very good condition with light surface abrasions. 32 toz. From the Ray Bentley Collection.
