A lovely and unique framed oil on canvas landscape painting masterfully painted by Walter Emerson Baum (American, 1884 - 1956). The painting is titled on the canvas verso and on the wooden stretcher: "Illustration for Thomas Hardy 'First Lady of Sussex'". Depicting a English countryside view with two figures on horseback emerging from forest, with a lavish castle visible in the background. Executed in dark green, blue and orange-brown color tones. Nicely mounted in gold-tone wood frame. Signed by an artist on the front in the lower right corner. It is in excellent condition, with wear consistent with age and use.
