Nice example of a wooden canteen for the State of New York from the War of 1812. The canteen is of wooden stave construction with iron bands around the edges. The canteen measures 7 - 1/4" diameter and 3" deep and is marked "S.N.Y." in thin white paint on the obverse. The reverse has been personalized with what appears to be a soldier's initials "OW" carved into the wood. There also appears to be some other designs that were lightly scratched into the wood. CONDITION: The canteen retains its seldom seen brown finish. A few of the staves have shrunk creating some gaps around the edges that make the canteen rattle a bit when held. The painted lettering has faded in some areas but is still legible. The cork stopper, leather tong, and screws affixing the tong are old, but are later replacements added for display. There appears to be a thin coat of preservative on the canteen. Overall good. This canteen was once part of the H. Charles McBarron Jr. and Ed Vebell collections, so it is possible that this canteen was used for several US military illustrations. JLD
