Circa 1600. This elaborate wrought iron example is acid etched with various mythical beasts, predominately gryphon and cockatrice. Elaborate locking mechanism utilizes a double bolt system which can only be retracted through use of the key which actuates a lever. Complete with key. CONDITION: Very good, with crisp etching visible throughout, and some separation at corners from age. Delamination from hand forging is visible through. Metal has acquired a lovely dove-grey-mixed-with-brown patina. 4 feet appear original, but one is loose. These boxes are absolutely fascinating examples of period engineering. EMW
