This is referred to as a contract musket, which refers to companies placed under contract to make the U.S. Springfield Model 1861 copy in their facility. The Trenton contract was obtained by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton at the Trenton Locomotive Machine Company in Trenton, New Jersey and made a total of 11,495 rifles between 1863-1864. Lock is stamped U.S. Trenton with an American eagle and dated 1864. Top of barrel is dated 1864, left side of barrel has VP proof with eagle head, left breech stamped NJ for New Jersey. Stamp left side of stock, NJ in oval, for New Jersey, indicating ownership stamp. Two leaf folding military rear sight, post front sight. Original rod. Sports three barrel bands and a forend tip with a U.S. marked buttplate. Nearly full length walnut stock. CONDITION: All metal is finished in the white and in near mint condition with minor age freckling. Razor sharp markings. Bright blue original nipple. Stock is also near new aside from a few minor bumps. Rifle appears to be new old stock and probably never saw field use, with most marks from storage. Fine action with a strong shiny bore with some very minor black powder abrasion which may clean. Comes with an excellent bayonet, also in the white, stamped U.S. CONDITION: Bayonet has scattered age freckling.
