This early fowler is stocked in figured maple and appears to have Berks or Lehigh County, Pennsylvania form. Components are from a large bore English fowler. The tapered round barrel is marked "LONDON" on top, near hooked breech, two Birmingham proofs on left side of breech. Barrel retained by three iron keys. Rounded lockplate has a stamped crown over "W." in the center and the frizzen spring appears to be a period replacement. Brass furniture is from an English fowler and all components engraved, including sideplate with arms motifs. Trigger guard's front finial has been reinforced using a screw. Full length heavy figured maple stock of Lehigh or Berks County form, forend terminates with a brass nosecap. Hickory ramrod probably a period replacement. CONDITION: Good condition overall, barrel shows wear and some corrosion at breech. Lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration with some scattered areas of heavy corrosion. Brass furniture has been polished and now retains a mellowing patina with some scuffs and marks from use. Stock very good with some scattered age cracks and marks from use, toe with a period replaced piece of maple retained by square headed nails, some minor splintering near muzzle on right side of forend. A very nice early American fowler.
