For similar examples, see pg. 385 in "American Military Shoulder Arms: Vol. I" by Moller. This example is equipped with a 44" rounded barrel with a brass blade front sight, pair of wedding rings 12" from breech, inscribed "8 R 2 B C 3 No 23" on top of barrel. Long banana lock with beveled edges and wrigglework about the borders, signed "A DANNENBERG" in center (G) a later addition in a different font, faceted unbridled pan. Trumpet headed ramrod with threaded tail, slightly too short, feeding through 3 ferrules into a reinforced mouth. Brass nosecap. Bayonet lug has been removed, with visible square on underside of barrel. Sideplate with double retaining bolts. Brass trigger guard with vaguely pineapple finials on either end of tang. Sharp comb with cheek rest. Brass buttplate. Left side of stock inscribed "17" under cheekrest. Sling swivels at trigger guard and above third ferrule. CONDITION: Barrel has been heavily rebrowned softening legends, with previous bayonet lug a slightly differnet color. Middle ferrule replaced. Break in stock 28" from nosecap. Lock is a crude reconversion and it seems likely that a Dutch musket was later married to a German lock. Numerous chips around lock, and some cracks to butt at plate. Stock has other numerous handling marks, including 2 chips on left side of wrist. Lock works appropriately, bore has minimum oxidation. Consignor states that the musket was found in Virginia, near Yorktown. EMW
