Serial number 237728 manufactured in 1863, serial number matching on all major components. Wedge is numbered 7718. Last digit of serial number on cylinder appears to have been re-cut, possibly during period. 5" barrel with hand engraved "Sam'L Colt" in script, brass pin front sight. 6 shot, .31 caliber cylinder with unique hand engraved stagecoach holdup scene and engraved borders around front edge and locking notches. Small brass trigger guard and brass backstrap. Classic Gustave Young engraving with Germanic scrolls on a punch dot background. Wolfs head motif on hammer and a dog head motif on the left barrel lug. Scroll engraving on barrel, loading lever, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, and hammer. Hand engraved "COLTS PATENT" in a banner on left side of frame. Letter "I" over or below serial numbers, designating ivory grips and possibly extra polish. One piece ivory grips with unique engraved borders at the butt matching borders located on revolver recoil shields, cylinder, trigger guard, and backstrap. Housed in a walnut partition fitted case with burgundy color interior. Complete with correct powder flask, brass bullet mold, packet of combustible cartridges, percussion cap tin, and correct case key. CONDITION: Very good overall, revolver retains a cleaned silver finish with a few light dings and scratches. Areas have been cleaned to bare metal. Cylinder has been cleaned to bare metal with light pitting and shows 90%+ of stagecoach holdup scene. Trigger guard and backstrap are a mustard color patina. Ivory grips have few age lines however, is completely sound showing a very pleasing mellow ivory patina. Case overall is fine with a few small age cracks, retaining most of the original varnish. Interior shows moderate wear with light fading and some soiling. Powder flask shows multiple small dents with a seam separation on one side. Bullet mold is good with multiple dings and dents with a mustard color patina. Overall an attractive deluxe engraved case set. -MKS-
