Approximately 6,150 New Model 1863 rifles were produced by Sharps for use in the Civil War with martial inspector marks found on many components. This example features a 30" .52 caliber barrel marked at breech "NEW MODEL 1863" and "M.N.M". Bayonet lug front sight and Lawrence patent ladder rear sight. Case hardened receiver remains in unconverted percussion form. 2-piece hardwood stocks mounted with 3 barrel bands, patchbox, and blued butt plate. Complete with a well fitting "C&Co" marked socket bayonet. These bayonets were furnished by Collins and Company for use with the Model 1859 and 1863 Sharps rifles. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Action retains significant portions of muted case colors with some expected wear. Other metal components have largely turned to a dark gray patina with some traces of arsenal reapplied finish. Butt plate retains significant amounts of thinning reapplied blue finish. Wood is fine as refreshed with some period impressions and light age splits near butt. Very fine bore and mechanics. BAS
