Half octagon to round barrel with sporting front sight and rear sight broken off. Forearm cap case colored. Receiver is case colored with a dust cover that is blued. Loading gate is of bright nitre blue. Case colored hammer, lever, and trigger. Comes equipped with what looks to be a fancy stock but no "X"s on bottom tang to indicate so. Does have an assembly line number that matches buttplate on toe of buttplate but not in top channel of stock. Also comes with four piece cleaning rod behind trap door of buttplate. No caliber marking on top flat of barrel nor caliber marking on brass carrier lifter. A feature that sometimes Second Models do have caliber markings when the .38-40 was introduced around the time of this serial number. Comes with sling swivels mounted on stock but none are attached to bottom of forearm cap. Receiver is drilled for a carbine saddle ring stud but appears to have never had one. Comes with a factory white sheet indicating all options with exception of stock retaining sling swivel. Very fine overall. Barrel retains solid 98% original blue with slight pin pricking on top of round barrel next to flat surface area. Front sight is of the German silver type that retains 95% of its blue. Rear sight has been broken in two. Forearm cap sporting 95-97% bright case colors. Receiver on left side 95-97% original case colors with majority of colors being bright and shiny. Right side 95-97% bright shiny case colors with loading gate in a bright nitre blue at 98-99%. Bottom of receiver has strong colors, just not bright. Hammer retains 95-97% of its colors with a small drag line. Lever with 50-60% case color, strong on flat sides of lever and light to medium patina on bottom of lever. Wood has had additional finish applied and sports a few surface scratches and dings with one chip of wood missing on bottom tang next to receiver. Also right side of stock is stamped right above sling swivel "EM GOODALL" and in the same place on the right side. Also on high part of the stock a few surface scratches and impressions. Buttplate houses four piece cleaning rod behind trap door and buttplate has 98% vivid case colors. Forearm has light compression, small amount of surface scratches and no chips or missing pieces of wood. Bright shiny bore, minor surface pitting in chamber area of barrel. Cycles correctly, mechanics are fine. Factory research states that serial No. 81427 was shipped on January 21st, 1882 as a half octagon rifle with case hardened finish.
