Manufactured in 1861 at the opening of the Civil War for martial use bearing "S" inspector stamps throughout and a faint inspector cartouche on the left grip. Standard 8" .44 caliber barrel with 1-line New York address, German silver blade front sight, and hammer notch rear sight. 6-shot percussion cylinder rollstamped with naval engagement scene. Recoil shield is cut for shoulder stock with appropriate iron backstrap. Grips are plain 1-piece walnut. Revolver is accompanied with period military rig components including a leather "NEWARK (?)" marked flap holster, "J.DAVY & Co/NEWARK-N.J." cartridge box, illegibly marked cap box, and "US" marked belt with "US" buckle. Also included is a sealed packet of period "D. C. SAGE & Co." combustible .44 caliber cartridges. CONDITION: Very good. Iron components exhibit a dove gray patina with traces of original finishes and evidence of cleaned, light oxidation. Cylinder scene partially visible but faint. Grips have some impressions and added finish, remaining good overall. Bright, shootable bore. Numbered components match excluding the wedge. Leather gear is overall very good showing wear and some light surface cracking, remaining largely pliable. Holster has more wear and surface crackling with areas of loss to outer surface. A great honest Civil War Colt with period accoutrements! BAS
