Manufactured in 1875 and issued to Massachusetts bearing a "MASS / 48" marking on the front of the receiver. Fit with a standard 32 - 5/8" round barrel chambered in .45-70 with blade front sight and rifle rear sight. Case hardened high arch breech block marked "MODEL / 1873" over an eagle head with crossed arrows and "US". Lockplate marked with a federal eagle and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1873". Stocked in oil finished walnut with a partially legible "ESA" cartouche and standard blued steel mounts. Complete with a "US" socket bayonet. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel and lock have developed a rich chocolate patina, with mounts retaining portions of arsenal polished blue finish. Breech block likewise retains flashes of faint case color. Stock has a pleasing age darkened appearance with some minor marks. Strong bore with some light pitting. Good mechanics. BAS
