Joseph Clarkson worked circa 1730 in England. The early locks are marked "CLARKSON" and have an early banana shape. The brass furniture, excluding the trigger guards, dates to the same early time period. The trigger guards are circa 1770. The pistols have period stocks and were stocked using early components from an early Clarkson pistol. The barrels feature "LONDON" on top flats. Barrels engraved with a cartouche and deeply with a cross on each, behind where top flats terminate. Left sides of breeches stamped with 2 Birmingham proofs. The convex banana-shaped locks have simple tooled borders. Centers engraved "CLARKSON". The brass furniture includes engraved and stylized S-shaped sideplates, full stirrup pommel caps engraved with flowers in the centers. Symmetrical wrist escutcheons with vacant inscription panels, trigger guards with acorn front finials, and ramrod ferrules. Walnut stocks have simple relief-carved fans around the barrel tangs. Complete with wooden ramrods with brass caps. CONDITION: Barrels retain a grey surface with markings very good, some light scattered pitting. Locks are in their original flintlock configuration and function well. Some scattered pitting. One lock retaining bolt is a replacement. Brass furniture retains a mellow patina. Stocks show scattered marks from use and minor cracks and chips. Last 1 - 1/2" repaired on one pistol. A very attractive pair. DMG
