This Pieper Arms Co side by side shotgun was cut down and mounted with a heavy iron sheath with brass trimmings, ostensibly for protection from the sea, and brass half moon with nuts and bolts for attaching to a ship. A modification of this nature would be ideal for firing bomb lances, which became popular circa 1850, supplanting the killing lance for dispatching whales. Brass sheath is unmarked, mounted with an optical telescope that is also unmarked. Shotgun appears to be a sidelock, which has had the trigger guard removed, presumably to allow for use with gloves, and a tongue bracket has been welded to bottom of action. Stock shattered at wrist and held together with black electrical tape, with visible sheet metal repair. Hard rubber buttplate and pistol grip cap. CONDITION: Sheath has an even layer of oxidation to iron, with flashes of dove grey throughout. Brass has a pleasant uncleaned gold appearance with some tarnishing. Bottom of action has some heat distortion from welding on of tongue bracket. Action has oxidation commensurate with sheath. Stock shattered at wrist as aforementioned, with a significant chip under the right sidelock, and other associated handling marks. Buttplate with chip on right side. Mechanics need attention as action will not lock up and left hammer won't hold cock. Bores are good with some oxidation. EMW
