For an identical example of this model with the same markings, see pgs. 385-389 of "American Military Shoulder Arms, Vol. 1" by George Moller. The books surmises that these were part of a pre-French and Indian War 18,000 musket shipment to the colonies from Holland in 1741. The muskets were ordered and paid for by Great Britain. For another example and further information on these muskets, see pgs. 202-203 of "Muskets of the Revolution and the French & Indian Wars" by Bill Ahearn. The 2-stage barrel is stamped "So. CAROLINA" on top, towards the breech in 1/8" letter height. To the left of the brass half-moon front site, the barrel is engraved "C - No. 586". Bayonet lug mounted on bottom, near muzzle. There is also a stamped shield-shaped cartouche of a crown over a star stamped at breech. The flat banana lockplate has beveled edges. Standard brass Model 1740 furniture. Replaced iron ramrod. Walnut stock with relief-carved teardrop around barrel tang and behind lock and sideplate. CONDITION: Barrel retains a mostly light grey patina. Markings very good, some scattered marks from use. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and retains a grey patina, mainspring not working. Brass polished, some scattered marks from use. Stock retains a dark opaque coat of finish. Some scattered marks from use, minor splinter missing along barrel on left side. Some wood restoration along forend. Ramrod and sling swivels are contemporary. A very rare and attractive American-marked pre-French and Indian War weapon.
