US M1816 musket fitted with Maynard tape priming device and dated 1858. Alteration also included fitting a rear sight, rifling the barrel, cupping the ramrod for use with Minié ball projectiles, and installing a "chambered breech" to withstand the higher pressures of using Minié ball projectiles. 42" barrel in .69 caliber with 3 groove rifling, iron blade front sight integral to 1816 type band, and M1855 rear sight. 1 piece walnut stock with 3 barrel bands, and US marked buttplate. Left side of barrel is "N.J" ownership marked and dated 1858 near breech. Stock bears "LS" cartouche on left flat opposite lock. A total of only 1300 M1816s altered in this fashion during the fiscal year of 1858 belonged to the state of New Jersey, with only 200 of these receiving a rear sight. CONDITION: Very good, with iron parts turned a freckled brown patina with areas of original National Armory Bright still visible in well protected areas, such as under barrel bands. Barrel bands have been cleaned bright. Stock is excellent with minor handling marks and no major cracks or repairs. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with well-defined rifling.
