(.880 Bore diameter) Octagon to sixteen sided to round twist barrel with under rib, tapers rapidly to a fairly thin muzzle, breech section measures 1.6" across flats as designed for heavy powder charge. Rear portion of scroll engraved top flat is also engraved "Tryon Philadelphia" in script. Hickory ramrod with brass ferrule tip and tail is held by two plain pipes. Bottom flat of barrel has Birmingham black powder proofs. Patent hook breech has inset gold poincon marked "WARRAN" "TED". Breech iron with integral fence is engraved with open acanthus. Back spring lock with round bodied serpentine hammer is engraved with more open scrolling acanthus and "Tryon". Steel trigger guard with reverse curve in front of bow, and curled "pistol grip" is engraved with more scrolling acanthus. Buttstock of dense American walnut has extra weight in butt and measures 14-1/4" over steel buttplate with long top spur. A floral shaped German silver escutcheon is on toe line, and broadly spaced checkering is at grip. Forend tip and thimble of German silver and stock attaches to barrel with two captive side bolts through shaped German silver escutcheons. CONDITION: Good, as refinished a long while ago. Barrels have most of an old re-brown with some definition to twist pattern, sharp edges rounded and silvered. All other metal is relatively smooth grey to brown patina with some brightening from cleaning, and some scattered pits, mostly on buttplate. Stock retains most of an old oil finish, sharp edges a bit rounded, checkering rerun, and a 3-1/2" x 1" piece of wood replaced at toe. Bore is fair to good with considerable rusting. Lock is good. A neat old American waterfowler by a local maker. MGM87. CORRECTION: Gun is a 7 bore not 4 bore as stated. I internal bore is .880".
