Well marked in two lines on the lock "VIRGINIA/ Manufactory", "RICHMOND/ 1818" at tail. "P" proof on left side of barrel at breach. Has the assembly number of "11" on the buttplate, bands, bayonet lug and trigger guard. Looks like "77" stamped on the inside of the trigger guard. In 1818, approximately 5,292 muskets were produced. This is considered a second variation due to placement of the band springs in front of the bands and rounded finials on the trigger guard. Virginia Manufactory guns are often considered secondary Confederate arms, even in flint. Accompanied by a socket bayonet marked "US/ TA" which does not quite fit the gun. CONDITION: All metal surfaces have been cleaned to bright with some areas of very minor pitting and light surface rust. Markings are clear, although the middle part of "Manufactory" is worn. Wood is good with dings and handling marks, there is a repair with old nails using the original piece of wood between the lock and barrel. A glued crack in the wood extending 5 inches from the front of the lock. Some chips along the ram rod channel. Wood is worn between the rear and middle bands. Fine mechanical function. Bayonet in matching condition. GR
